The company was founded in 1976 by Jan G. van Aswegen with the introduction of a weekend bus service in Klerksdorp between Vaal Reefs Gold Mine and Maseru. Since the beginning, Vaal Maseru has imbedded itself as one of the market leaders in the industry, and has been doing so for over four decades.

As a long established Passenger Transport Entity, the North West based company specialises in Long Distance passenger transportation, Private Hires and Commercial contracts within the borders of South Africa. With depots in Klerksdorp, Gauteng and Rustenburg, Vaal Maseru proves to still be a key player in the Passenger Transport Industry.

1976
Company Formed

The company was formed on 18 October – the name was derived from the main route serviced at that time: Vaal Reefs (Klerksdorp) to Maseru, capital of Lesotho.

1980
Growth
  • Fleet grew to 14 buses, routes include Ficksburg, Van Rooyen Gate and Maseru, providing services daily.
  • Contract awarded to transport Teba recruited mine workers.
1984
New Depot, New Routes
  • Welkom Depot opened.
  • New route to Eastern Cape (former Transkei).
1991
New Premises & New Routes
  • Orkney depot moved to Klerksdorp at the old Drive-in.
  • Route to Mozambique opened from new Klerksdorp depot.
1993
Rustenburg Depot & New route
  • Rustenburg depot starts operations.
  • The company opened a route from Rustenburg to Mozambique operating from a filling station.
  • Rustenburg fully operational by 1996, servicing all three route to Eastern Cape, Mozambique and Lesotho.
1994
Carletonville Depot
  • Carletonville depot starts operations.
    Fully operational by 1999 – servicing all three routes to Eastern Cape, Mozambique and Lesotho
1994
Political Unrest

Political unrest and a three month long strike resulted in extensive losses. Eleven buses and one tow truck were burned.

1997
New Buses, New Look
  • Aquired 20 new buses.
  • New bus paint design changed from traditional three stripes – including design with Big 5 on the rear.
1999
Multi Transport Aquisition
  • Acquired Multi Transport, including 40 buses previously owned by Multi Transport.
  • Carltonville depot moved to old Drive-in (current location)
2000
Growth, Floods & Mining Decline
  • 30 new 1729 Mercedes Benz on De Haans, expanding the fleet to 180 buses.
  • Employees total approximately 518 and 55000 passengers transported on average from all four depots monthly.
  • Floods in Mozambique claims 20 buses and 14 trailers.
  • From 2000 onward a decline in the mining industry could be seen throughout the country.
2004
Growth & Awards
  • Fleet was expanded by an additional 30 buses. Bodies were imported from Brazil and the chassis were manufactured locally.
  • Won award for exceptional growth and service excellence (Wesvaal Chamber of Commerce)
2007
New Man Buses

Acquired 18 new MAN buses for contract work.

2008
Joint Venture - VM Diamond Transport

Start joint venture with VM Diamond Transport, operating in Musina on mining contracts.

2013
Fleet expands

Fleet was expanded with 21 new Yutong buses, all imported from China.

2014
More awards
  • Won Wesvaal Chamber of Business award for corporate enterprise of the year.
  • Another 12 buses imported from China.

Joint Venture - Multi Transport

Start joint venture with Multi Transport operating in Kroonstad on mining contracts.

2024
New Scania Buses
  • Acquired 2 new Scania 65 seater MCV S140N
  • Scania fleet currently consists of 3x 53 seaters, and 4x 60 seater luxury Scania Higer tourers.
